What Makes us Special

Music and drama heart

The creative arts are a real source of pride at Fairstead

We excel especially in music and drama. Our Performing Arts Centre is amazingly well kitted out with everything from African drums to ukuleles. There is also a full lighting and sound rig. Pupils love both being in the spotlight and learning how a well-designed lighting scheme can help bring a performance to life.

All pupils from Yearlings to Year 6 enjoy two music lessons a week. 75% of pupils from Year 1 upwards learn an instrument or take vocal studies. Children from across the school regularly practise and perform together as part of the school orchestra, Chamber and Christmas Choirs and Junior Choir.

Pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 have a double year group class drama lesson each week too. Their love of drama and music is plain to see through the many formal and informal opportunities that the children are given to showcase their talents. The Years 5 and 6 production is a real highlight of the Performing Arts annual calendar. After weeks of intense (but enjoyable) rehearsals, the pupils tread the boards in what is always a creatively staged and beautifully presented production. Recent productions have included Matilda, Annie Junior and The Lion King. Under the watchful eyes of the departmental staff, and those other staff members who choose to get involved, the children never fail to impress and to entertain. Our productions are always performed to a packed audience of appreciative family and friends.

“One of my best moments has to be when my dog Dave joined me on stage in the amazing production of Annie Junior. Thank you to Mrs Warburton and Mrs Cocks for giving him his big break and believing in him. His moment of fame has slightly gone to his head.”
